Standards

The four humanitarian principles

The principles that guide our humanitarian work, from assessing needs to making programme decisions.

  • Humanity

    Protecting life and dignity

We act to relieve suffering wherever it is found, and to protect life and health.

  • Impartiality

    Assistance guided by need

We assess and respond on the basis of need alone — not ethnicity, religion, politics or any other distinction.

  • Neutrality

    Taking no side in conflict

We do not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

  • Independence

    Humanitarian objectives first

Our programme decisions are our own, and are not subordinated to the political or military objectives of any party.

Protection from harm

Safeguarding and PSEA

We are committed to protection from sexual exploitation and abuse. Every member of staff and every volunteer is bound by a code of conduct, and any report is investigated.

This commitment applies from our first day of operations, not from our first incident.

Raising a concern

Complaints and feedback

Anyone may raise a concern about our conduct or the conduct of our staff, including anonymously. Concerns are received by a named member of staff and are not shared with the team a complaint is about.
